Weddings at the Courthouse
Rules & Regulations
Ceremonies are limited to the Courthouse Rotunda only. The rotunda, while a spectacular, soaring area, actually has extremely limited floor space. The central arch of the rotunda and the staircases descending to it are a beautiful setting for the ceremony.
Time Limits
There is no specific time limit to your ceremony, but please be advised that set-up and removal of flowers, decorations and seating must all take place on the day of the wedding, and you should have a representative on hand to supervise.
Officiant
There are no restrictions as to whom performs the ceremony, as long as they are licensed to do so by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Couples wishing to be married by a Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas Judge or a Magisterial District Justice must contact the Judge's chambers or Justice's office directly to request/confirm their availability.
Pictures
Pictures are allowed inside the Courthouse, and the Courthouse grounds are open to the public for photos at no fee.
Music & Sound
If you intend to have performed or recorded music, the acoustics in the rotunda are excellent, and at past weddings a sound system has not been necessary. Standard electrical outlets are the only available power sources for electronic equipment, and the courthouse does not offer a larger capacity service that might be required for more extensive sound systems.
If required by the officiant or for readings by party members, the courthouse does have an amplified podium available.
Release From Liability
A Release from Liability must be signed by every member of the bridal party, particularly if the bride, groom, or any members of the party intend to proceed up, down, or through the rotunda staircase, archway or platform. A parent may sign for any junior member of the bridal party.
Usage Fee
There is a $500 usage fee to cover the overtime costs to courthouse staffing. Please make your check payable to Luzerne County.
Parking
Parking for your courthouse wedding will be across River Street in the main Courthouse lot. Handicapped parking is located at the rear, lower level of the courthouse, where there is an elevator lift for guests requiring assistance.
