|Contract Criminal Defense Attorney||1/12/2023||
Contract criminal defense attorneys are sought to handle misdemeanor criminal matters due to the attorney shortage in the Luzerne County Public Defender’s Office. Duties include court hearings and trials (both bench and jury) before Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas. Specifically, duties include pre-trial filings and hearings, guilty pleas and/or trials, and sentencing hearings where representation is constitutionally required.
These contract attorneys will be expected to provide effective representation to clients who qualify for legal representation through the Luzerne County Public Defender’s Office or are appointed to represent clients by the Court. No attorney may have any pending criminal charges against him or her, other than a minor traffic violation, in this or any jurisdiction. No attorney applicant shall have any pending disciplinary complaint or proceeding brought against him by the Disciplinary Board of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania or any other jurisdiction.
The applicant attorneys must have knowledge of Pennsylvania criminal law and procedure as well as the Pennsylvania Rules of Evidence.
Each attorney will be contracted for a period of 90 days. Compensation is set at $7,000 per month. Interested parties should send a resume to Court Administration attention Melissa Schatzel at 200 North River Street, Wilkes Barre PA 18711.
