Special Announcement regarding application for representation:
Effective 11-23-20 the Public Defenders office will not accept applications in person at Penn Place. You can apply online. Mail an application or drop your application off in the lobby of Penn Place in a secure lock box. All applications will be followed up by an investigator assigned to this office. Applications are also available in the lobby of Penn Place.
In addition, applications can still be made online at the County website using this link to the Public Defender Application.
The Luzerne County’s Public Defender’s Office is dedicated to protecting the Constitutional rights of all indigent individuals accused of violating the law. We provide quality and zealous legal advocacy to seek the best possible outcomes for our clients with an interdisciplinary team approach throughout their entire case experience. Our office employs specifically-trained and experienced attorneys, social service advocates and criminal investigators to meet the individualized needs of our clients.
In accordance with the Pennsylvania Public Defender Act, we provide free legal representation for qualifying applicants for the following:
- Felony cases
- Misdemeanor cases
- Certain criminal traffic citations
- State parole hearings
- Mental health hearings
- Juvenile delinquency
- Probation and Parole violations
