Signs of Drug Abuse

There are many signs, both physical and behavioral, that indicate drug use. Each drug has its own unique manifestations but there are some general indications that a person is using drugs:

  • Bloodshot eyes
  • Drop in school grades
  • Evidence of drugs or drug paraphernalia (e.g., needles, pipes, rolling papers)
  • Excessive mileage on vehicle
  • Fake ID (false driver's license indicating legal drinking age)
  • Having more or less money than usual
  • Hostile or argumentative attitude
  • Lack of interest in personal appearance
  • Legal problems
  • Loss of interest in family activities
  • Loss of weight
  • Lying and/or stealing
  • Marked change in sleeping patterns (getting more or less sleep)
  • Memory loss
  • New interest in drug culture (e.g. drug related posters, music or magazines)
  • Rapid speech coupled with loss of appetite and excessive thirst
  • Refusal or hostility when asked to talk about possible drug and alcohol use
  • Smell of alcohol on their breath
  • Stolen or missing household property
  • Sudden change in friends
  • Truancy and/or absenteeism from work
