The Borough of Forty Fort has a prominent place in the history of the settlement of Wyoming Valley. It is named after the forty settlers who came from Connecticut in 1770 and built a fort along the banks of the Susquehanna River for protection from hostile forces during those turbulent times. A large rock on River St. at the corner of Fort St. marks the approximate spot where the fort stood.
Other points of historical interest include the Nathan Denison House, Forty Fort Cemetery, and the Old Meeting House. The Wyoming Avenue Park is a beehive of activity. Whether the children are playing on the playground equipment, hooping it up on the basketball courts or reveling in the refreshing water at the pool, they can be assured of good, clean, safe fun. The Borough Park includes open play areas, toddler area with swings and small sliding board, the "fort" play structure, basketball court, gazebo, and swimming pool. Forty Fort prides itself on its youth and the park offers numerous opportunities to keep them occupied including an Easter parade in the spring, a Halloween parade in the fall, and movies, music and basketball tournaments in the summer. The pool is open each summer from June to August and offers many exciting events such at Christmas in July, Teen night, and Family night.
In addition to the park, other sport facilities within the Borough that provide recreational activities include the Forty Fort Little League field on Tripp Street and the Luzerne County Sports complex with soccer fields and open play areas. There is also a walking trail along the Susquehanna River flood protection levee.
