Avoca Borough was known as Pleasant Valley when it was incorporated on May 24, 1871. The Borough was originally part of Pittston Township. On January 21, 1887, Luzerne County Court approved the name change to Avoca Borough because there was another location in Pennsylvania with a Post office address of Pleasant Valley. There are approximately 60 business establishments in Avoca, including a bank and a post office. In addition, Avoca has six churches, seven civic/veteran organizations, Community Center, two outdoor parks, one little league park, and one adult/teenage baseball park. Avoca's Police Department, Ambulance Association and Volunteer Fire Department provide 24-hour service. Avoca Borough is most known for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, which is partially located in Avoca Borough.
