"As the sheriff of Luzerne County, I intend to make the Luzerne County Sheriff’s Department one of the most respected and professional departments in our state. I pledge to be a full-time Sheriff and do everything in my power to make sure our senior citizens and children will always be my number one priority in Luzerne County. I will devote full attention to the court system and courtroom security. I will work hand-in-hand with Local, State, and Federal Law Enforcement Agencies to combat the war on drugs and gang activity. I plan to institute a county-wide neighborhood Crime Watch program for the safety of all Luzerne County residents. I will recall in service the Underwater Rescue Team, the Horse Team, and the Motorcycle Team."
Sheriff Savokinas is a former resident of Pittston Township and now resides in Exeter Township with his wife, Alice (DeQuevedo) and son, Austin. Sheriff Savokinas is the son of Michael and Georgia (Bartolai) Savokinas of Pittston Township, owners of Savo’s Pizza & Family Restaurant.
Sheriff Savokinas completed his high school education at Pittston Area High School in 1991 and went on to receive his ACT 120 from Lackawanna Junior College in 1992. In 1993 the sheriff also received his Sheriff Act II in order to serve the county in the Sheriff’s department as Deputy Sheriff under the late Sheriff Frank Jogodinski. Sheriff Savokinas is also a receipient of the Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Investigations certification. Sheriff Savokinas received a prominent appointment of Special Agent by Governor Thomas J. Ridge, who is currently the presidential appointee to the Office of Homeland Security.
Sheriff Savokinas has served as a law enforcement official for over 17 years. He has worked in various areas and capacities within law enforcement including criminal investigation and drug enforcement, courthouse security and serving warrants, while consistently maintaining a prominent role as a liaison for several law enforcement organizations including State, Local and Federal organizations. During Sheriff Savokinas’ service with several local municipal police departments including Avoca, he received several promotions. First to the rank of Lieutenant Detective in charge of the Special Investigations Unit where he has investigated numerous drug-related and criminal cases and secondly while serving in the Avoca Police department, Sheriff Savokinas was also promoted to manage the Avoca Police department as the Officer in Charge.
Sheriff Savokinas has served concurrently for four years with the State Drug Task Force and has demonstrated his skills within the law enforcement community with his extensive knowledge of the Pennsylvania Rules of Criminal & Civil Procedures and enforcement of all state and local laws within the Commonweallth of Pennsylvania. Through his life-long service in law enforcement, Sheriff Savokinas work has extended throughout several different regions including all provinces of Canada, seven different states, and twelve different counties within Pennsylvania. Sheriff Savokinas has received several recognitions for his dedication, work, and bravery as a law enforcement official. He has been the receipent of the Award for Valor presented by the Avoca Mayor James J. Haddock and the Avoca City Council for his act of bravery in saving the life of a potential drowning victim.
In his most recent appointment before his service in the Luzerne County Sheriff’s Department, Sheriff Savokinas worked with the Canadian Pacific Railway Police Service Justice Program where he served for 10 years. He was promoted ot the rank of Intelligence Officer specializing in Gangs (MS-13) and Terrorism.
Sheriff Savokinas is a member of the Transportation Communications Union and the Fraternal Order of Police.
Sheriff Savokinas is also a member of the 5th District Luzerne County Democratic Committee and continues his service and dedication to the safety and security of the people of Pennsylvania.
