TRAIL DESCRIPTION: The West Side Trail is an in-town trail system, featuring off-road segments as well as improvements to existing sidewalks and roadways for bicyclists and pedestrians. The current open part of the Trail features improvements for pedestrians including sidewalks, curbs and tree lawns from the Swetland Homestead/Levee trail access to Trayor Street in Exeter.
The West Side Trail is a 19 mile in-town trail system through the boroughs of Exeter, Wyoming, West Wyoming and West Pittston. The spine of the trail follows Rt.11. The trail is diverse in that sections are urban consisting of sidewalks while other sections are off-road in natural settings. The urban sections of the trail consist of sidewalks and curbs that beautify the downtown area and allow residents to take walks in their neighborhoods, encouraging an active lifestyle. Along this section residents can shop or enjoy the eateries and this section provides a safe route to school. The more natural section runs along the river front, Hicks Creek and the railroad tracks. The West Side Trail connects to the Luzerne County Levee Trail and will connect to the Luzerne County Rail with Trail.
THINGS TO SEE: The Wyoming Monument, a national landmark commemorating a Revolutionary war battle, the historic Swetland homestead, and the gracious homes and wide tree lawns of Wyoming Avenue. As you walk, look for a foot printed in the sidewalk that indicates that you are on the West Side Trail.
TRAILHEADS AND PARKNG: Park at the Levee trail parking lot on the south end of the West Side Trail, just north of the Midway Shopping Center and across from the Swetland Homestead. Or park at Sabatini’s Pizza at 1925 Wyoming Avenue (Rt. 11) in Exeter.
FUNDING: The West Side Trail has received approximately $550,000 in funding, including creation of a Master Plan for the entire trail, and design and construction for the first phase of sidewalk improvements as part of the trail.
