TRAIL DESCRIPTION: This planned suburban trail/greenway system provides approximately 20 miles of on and off-road trails in three loops, with connecting segments, throughout the Mountain Top area of Luzerne County. This trail will connect portions of Wapwallopen Creek, the Mountain Top community and the Crestwood Industrial park with the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor/Black Diamond Trail, as well as significant open space held by the American Legion, the Wright Township Recreation Park, and other key destinations.
The Master Plan for this trail and greenway system was completed in 2007. Rice Township through funding from Luzerne County and PADCNR spearheaded the Trail/Greenway Master Plan that connects the three townships that make up the Mountain Top community: Fairview, Rice, and Wright Townships. The Pennsylvania Environmental Council conducted the Public Participation Process and Architecture and Engineering Group of Plains was contracted to conduct the background data research, GIS mapping and develop construction costs for the final trail alignment.
FUNDING:
Rice Township received $50,000 in total funding to complete the Wapwallopen Creek Trail and Greenway Masterplan. To implement the plan, the Township and its planning partners will have to seek additional funding for design and construction.
