Bringing the Public In: Special Trail Events
As part of this report, PEC also inventoried special events and public outreach that each trail group conducts.
- National Trails Day: National Trails Day is the first Saturday in June. A number of trails celebrate National Trails Day with annual walks, bikes, and hikes, such as the West Side Trail Walk, the Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails Hike and Bike, and the Back Mountain Trail Bike Ride
- Keystone Active Zone Passport Program: This program provides incentives for children and families to visit local parks and trails during the late spring and summer. Open trails are stops on the Keystone Active Zone passport.
- Greater Hazleton Rail Trail Monthly Walks: The Greater Hazleton Civic Partnership hosts walks on the Rail Trail, as well as other area trails. In 2008, walks will start in the spring.
- Back Mountain Trail June Monday Walks: The Back Mountain Trail Council hosts walks on the Back Mountain Trail on Monday mornings in June. Contact ASTA for more information about walks in 2008.
- Clean-ups: The Back Mountain trail schedules trail clean-up days periodically, as does the Lehigh Gorge trail and the Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails Trail.
- Geocaches: A number of trails have geocaches. The Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails also holds introductory geocaching workshops.
