TRAIL DESCRIPTION: 16 mile unimproved “rail-trail” style trail, not officially open to the public, though passable in parts.

Phase 1 construction has started near White Haven, with 1.5 miles estimated to be complete by late summer 2008. Phase 2 construction is projected to start late fall 2008, about 6.5 miles northward from White Haven. Surface will be packed gravel.

This trail will connect the Borough of White Haven, at the southeast corner of Luzerne County with areas near the City of Wilkes-Barre, skirting the east edge of the Mountain Top community, and going by Crestwood Industrial Park. Sidewalk and Roadway improvements in the Borough of White Haven will link the Black Diamond Trail to the Lehigh Gorge State Park, a 20 mile trail system that is also part of the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor. The Black Diamond trail is owned by Anthracite Scenic Trails Association, also responsible for the Back Mountain Trail, and will be developed in partnership with the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor. The local Mountain Top Trail Council builds community support for the trail, updates municipalities, recruits volunteers, and performs trail maintenance.

TRAILHEADS AND PARKING: Trailheads to access the unimproved Black Diamond Trail can be found just beyond the Mountain Top Hose Company on Route 473, just after the intersection with Route 309. Because the trail is not officially open to the public, we strongly recommend that people wishing to use this trail visit with a group, rather than going alone—the Susquehanna Trailers Club, Mountain Top Trail Council, and the Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails all hold occasional hikes on the trail.

FUNDING:
The Black Diamond Trail has received approximately $1.876 million dollars in funding for all activities through construction of Phase 1 and Phase 2.

RECENT/CURRENT ACTIVITIES AND ISSUES:
Acquisition, Planning, Design: Phase 1 and 2 construction design underway.
Construction: Phase 1 started. Phase 2 to begin fall 2008 upon completion of Phase 1.
