TRAIL DESCRIPTION: Length—Phase 1 will be .6 miles, surface packed gravel

Covering a 405-acre area, the Ashley Planes Heritage Park when complete, will be one of the Wyoming Valley’s most significant historic sites. The park, currently in the planning stages, will provide visitors with a glimpse of what was once a state-of-the-art rail transport system for moving coal from the valley floor over the Wilkes-Barre Mountain and on to markets along the east coast. The park will include a walking trail following the planes as well as historic and environmental interpretative signage. Earth Conservancy is partnering with Luzerne County, Penn DOT, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (PA DCNR) and the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor to complete the project. The park will be donated to Luzerne County for ownership and operation when completed.

FUNDING:  Planning is complete and funding for design and construction has been received. In total, the Ashley Planes project has received a little more than $1.25 million in funding.
