National Trails Day
June 7, 2008

Opportunities to hike, bike or walk at a great place near you!!!

Back Mountain Trail Association Annual National Trails Day Bike Ride.
Easy 9 mile down hill ride (one way), can extend to 12 miles. Beginners Welcome! Meet at 8:30 AM, leave by 9:00 from the Frances Slocum State Park Boat Launch on Carverton Road. End at Nesbitt Park in Wilkes-Barre, or can continue to Wyoming/Swetland Homestead via Levee. Wear a helmet. Each person is responsible for their own shuttle/ride back. Hike the Mocanaqua Loop with the Earth Conservancy.
Orange Loop will be an approximately 2 hour hike over varied terrain. Meet at 9:45 AM, leave by 10:00 AM. Wear appropriate shoes and bring water. To get to trailhead, take Rt. 11 south to Shickshinny. Turn onto Shickshinny Bridge (Rt. 239) going to Mocanaqua and take the first left. This will be a short, dead-end street with only a few houses on the left-hand side. The trailhead is located at the end of the street, as well as a parking area. Greater Hazleton Rail Trail Hike & Bike.
Organized by the Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails. Bike & hike starts at 11:00 AM. Bikers can start at the back end of the trail along the Beryllium Road, and hikers at the Rt. 93 trail access parking lot, near intersection with 424. Free picnic & festival to follow at 12:30 open to general public. Festival includes live animals, bike inspections, geocaching workshop. For more information, contact Bob Skulsky at 455-1509.

Hike the Audobon Trail at the Seven Tubs Nature Center.
Sponsored by the Greater Wyoming Valley Audobon Society. Hike meets at 9:00 AM at at the Seven Tubs Parking Area off PA 115 near Bear Creek. Wear hiking shoes, and bring binoculars, water, and a snack/lunch for the easy to moderate hike. Registration is required by May 31st for this event. West Side Trail Walk. Sponsored by the West Side Trail Commission.
1.5 mile urban trail walk (one way) from Sabatini's Pizza, 1925 Wyoming Avenue, Exeter to the Swetland Homestead in Wyoming. Meet at Sabatini's at 11:00 PM and tour the Swetland Homestead for $3.00 for adults, $1.00 for children. If you need transportation back to Sabatini's please call 654-0933 in advance and we will accommodate you.

Wyoming Valley Riverfest
June 20 - 22, 2008

Friday, June 20, from 5:00 to 9:00 pm, at Public Square in Wilkes-Barre, enjoy the evening with music by George Wesley, food, fun, youth activities, scavenger hunt, RJG Latino Multi-Cultural Dancers, children painting a mural of the river, the Third Friday Arts Walk, and a free viewing of "Looking to the River" at Movies14 (8:00 pm).

Saturday, June 21, 2008, join the festival at Nesbitt Park, 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. In the afternoon, enjoy music by Don Shappelle, Dustin Switzer, and the Non-Refundables. There will be food, fun and activities for all ages to enjoy.

Saturday, June 21 - Paddle the Susquehanna in a Kayak or Canoe from Harding to Wilkes-Barre
Sunday, June 22 - Paddle the Susquehanna in a Kayak or Canoe from Wilkes-Barre to Hunlock Creek
